098 - probably backdated a little bit

Totally aside from the fact that mine smells like mangoes and Peter's smells like foam, is there any difference between guys' shaving cream and girls' shaving cream? I'm pretty sure I look better minus the stubble.

[private to Howie]

I wanna talk.

[Howie had actually brought her a razor, in the thought she might not be able to get her hands on one. He did realise about half way down there that Peter would probably have some, so it was a bit pointless.

Anyway. That wasn't why he was going down there. He knocked on the door and let himself inside. He had imagined she'd be taller than that, for some reason.] "I see you managed to shave. Afternoon."

[Elle touched the side of her face self-consciously.] "Yeah. It was easy." [The fact that there was a speck of blood on her fingertip when she dropped her hand made it a bit obvious that she was lying.

Moving on.] "When do I get more of my ability back?"

[No matter what else was going on in her life, one thing Elle knew for sure was that she wanted her full ability. So she'd made the decision to focus on that and forget all the other stuff, at least for now.]

[Howie didn't believe her for one minute, as he could see it wasn't a particularly good job, but it wasn't quite important. He was, though, a little taken aback at her question,]

"When you actually decide to talk to me about other things."

"Alright, I'll talk," [Elle huffed, crossing her arms, then uncrossing them and recrossing them because it felt weird and different.

She gave him a petulant glance.] "What am I supposed to talk about?"

[Howie paused, because it felt a little odd to be talking to a man instead of Elle, but quickly got back into it,] "What I wanted to discuss before. Why everything started becoming about wanting to be normal all of a sudden? Or... well, what changed. That's a good place to start."

[Instead of leaning against something, like he usually did, he found somewhere to sit, signalling his intention to stay for a proper answer.]

"You want me to lie down, you could get out a notepad, make it like a real therapy session?" [Elle snitted. If talking about this was what she had to do to get her ability back, then fine. But she didn't exactly feel comfortable doing it.]

"You were the one who wanted to talk. You don't get to make sarcastic comments. Come on, I'm not here to make your life more difficult, I just want to have a real, honest answer from you. I'm prepared to wait, but I'd rather not."

[He had a point. Elle tried disappearing into the couch, which didn't exactly work.]

"The flood," [she said reluctantly.] "That other Elle was as normal as I think I'll ever be, and everything that was wrong in her life was just as bad as everything that's wrong in my life." [She didn't think that summed it up quite right, but it was close enough, or at least the beginnings of close enough.]

Re: Spam it is!

[identity profile] kingfor-aday.livejournal.com 2010-03-01 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
[Howie nodded, and thought for a moment, trying to put the pieces together in his mind as much as he could before he said something else,] "What exactly do you think was so wrong in her life? Nobody really has a perfect, normal life, Elle, there's things wrong in everyone's life."

"People were after her, because of this." [She held up a hand and generated a ball of electricity, watching it intently for a few moments before extinguishing it.] "And she didn't know how to use it as well as me because nobody ever trained her." [Of course she knew by now that 'training' meant Daddy had experimented on her, but that didn't change the end results. She was good at using her ability because of what Daddy had done.]

"People who had a ridiculous religious principle, from what I could see. Not... everyone." [He watched the ball in her hand for a second, then realised that the second point was the far more important one.] "But your training... the way it was done, was that really worth better control of it? Do you really believe it was?"

Re: Spam it is!

[identity profile] cautionarystory.livejournal.com 2010-03-02 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
"Back home. People like... people like the people I worked for. Not just religious nuts. I'd rather be one of them, and I'd rather know how to use it." [Elle propped her feet up on the table, self-consciously trying to pull Peter's socks up higher so they didn't look like they were big on her.] "She hated her ability."

Re: Spam it is!

[identity profile] kingfor-aday.livejournal.com 2010-03-02 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
[Howie self consciously rubbed his neck where the other Elle had burnt him with her power and asked her,] "Why did she hate it? Because people were after her because of it, because people treated her differently and wanted to do... what you did to her?" [There was an important point about empathy there, but he wanted to hear what she thought first.]

Re: Spam it is!

[identity profile] cautionarystory.livejournal.com 2010-03-02 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
"She wanted to be normal too." [That probably proved Howie's point that nobody was really normal, but the other Elle had believed she could've been without her ability, and maybe that was true.] "She hurt people without meaning to, people were after her. Peter said she was bitter."

Re: Spam it is!

[identity profile] kingfor-aday.livejournal.com 2010-03-02 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
"Did he say what she thought she was bitter about?" [Howie could go with that description, in his head, so followed it up with,] "Did you think that if people like you being after her made her hate her power, you perhaps are making other people resent their power, making them bitter too?"

Re: Spam it is!

[identity profile] cautionarystory.livejournal.com 2010-03-02 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
"It's necessary." [That was all the explanation Elle had ever been given for any of the things the Company did, and it was all the explanation she'd ever needed.

Re: Spam it is!

[identity profile] kingfor-aday.livejournal.com 2010-03-02 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
[Howie shook his head,] "That's not reasoning. Necessary is always debatable as a term. It's the sort of reasoning people use to justify something they can't justify another way. Why is it necessary?"

"There are dangerous people we keep contained, and we teach people how to use their powers, and we have to do research..." [Elle trailed off and absently shot a spark from the tip of her left forefinger into the tip of her right.]

Re: Spam it is!

[identity profile] kingfor-aday.livejournal.com 2010-03-02 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
"Yes, but in exchange for teaching people how to use them, you're treating people like lab rats. Like some kind of experiment. Don't you think she resented being treated like an experiment?" [Howie knew he was probably going quite close to the bone there, but also felt he had to. He could tell she was just giving him the equivalent of the party line.]

Re: Spam it is!

[identity profile] cautionarystory.livejournal.com 2010-03-02 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
[Elle didn't have to bother remembering how the other Elle felt about being treated like an experiment, she knew how it felt.

She folded her legs in front of her, drawing in on herself while trying not to look like that's what she was doing.] "I don't know what I'm supposed to think about anything anymore," [she said in a very small voice.]

Re: Spam it is!

[identity profile] kingfor-aday.livejournal.com 2010-03-02 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
[Howie watched her body language and felt a little guilty. He knew it was, of course, about her, as much as the other her.] "Because of the flood? Elle, it's more important what you do think, than what you're supposed to think. Don't worry about repeating what anyone has told you, just think what you do think - don't worry about supposed to and not supposed to. Do you think the way you were treated was bad? Don't tell me what you were told to think about it, don't tell me what you think I want to hear. Just tell me what you think."

Re: Spam it is!

[identity profile] cautionarystory.livejournal.com 2010-03-02 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
"I don't like it. But Daddy did it to make me better, right? So I'd know all about my ability." [The other option was that her father simply hadn't cared, but if that were the case, she'd spent her whole life trying to get him to show affection he didn't even feel. And she was pretty sure that if her own father couldn't love her, that didn't say anything good about her. So she desperately wanted to believe he'd done it for her own good.]

Re: Spam it is!

[identity profile] kingfor-aday.livejournal.com 2010-03-02 12:35 pm (UTC)(link)
"Do you really believe that? Or is that what you've got to tell yourself to make it okay? People do that, when either doing things which are wrong, or sometimes when they've had them done to them; they want to believe it was for their own good, or some greater ideal. Do you really think that, or is that the only justification you can come up with?" [Howie frowned because it sounded quite harsh, but also quite true.] "Was knowing about your ability worth everything that was done to you by him?"

Re: Spam it is!

[identity profile] cautionarystory.livejournal.com 2010-03-02 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
"I don't know," [Elle admitted.] "I think it was. I don't know why he did it, though." [Maybe if it had turned out for the best, it didn't matter why. Maybe.]

Re: Spam it is!

[identity profile] kingfor-aday.livejournal.com 2010-03-02 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
[He had to stop and think again, and stared at the ceiling for a moment as he did so,] "Do you think that it's important why?" [He paused and asked another question which had just struck him as relevant,] "Did he treat you like he treated everyone else? All the... other people with powers?" [Not that Howie was one for double standards, but treating your own daughter like an experiment seemed... worse. Far worse. He mainly wanted to know if she could see that.]
